Shehu Sani, the senator representing Kaduna Central, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to step aside as Minister of Petroleum Resources and appoint a substantive minister instead, in light of the controversies surrounding the ministry and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) resulting from the leaked memo that Ibe Kachikwu, the minister of state of the ministry, sent to the president detailing alleged acts depicting massive breach of due process and insubordination by the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC, Maikanti Baru.
Sani made his position known via a statement issued Thursday in which he stated that Buhari did not enjoy the luxury of time and accommodating portfolio to oversee the oil industry.
He then advised the president to appoint a credible substantive minister to manage affairs in the oil industry, noting that such a move will help in decongesting the current cloud hovering over the industry.
Sani said, “President Buhari should disengage from being a Petroleum Minister and appoint a substantive minister whom the nation can hold accountable to the happenings in the nation oil industry.
“The President position as a minister can drag him into issues in the oil sector of which he has limited time to attend to.
